Spill Kits For Oil,
Chemicals And General Fluids
Have the appropriate spill kit and or
spill kit supplies on hand in areas of your workplace where spills
can happen daily or infrequently. The solution is always being prepared
with the appropriate spill response supplies to combat any environmental
or health risk situation. A Spill can be hazardous in nature depending
on the type of liquids spilled and according to your local and
state regulations. Oil Spill Kits selectively absorb hydrocarbons
and other petroleum based fluids while repelling water. Chemical
Spill Kits are designed and built for more aggressive spills such
as acids and bases usually found in laboratories and other kinds
of industrial manufacturing facilities. These Chemical Spill Kits
are also known as Hazmat Spill Kit and are available in the same
configurations as an Oil Spill Kit or General Universal Spill Kit
for non aggressive fluid spills. Preparation of a spill containment
kit consolidates spill control materials and personal protective
equipment in one universal location and packaged into the appropriate
size and configuration to handle a foreseeable spill in such workplaces
as labs, manufacturing, retail, commercial and even home workshops.
A spill response kit should be customized to meet the needs of
each work area. PPE must be selected based on the kinds hazardous
materials used. Store all spill response kits in a location where
individuals can quickly gain access to items needed in the event
of a spill. Hazardous material users should know where to locate
a spill kit and how to use the spill response kit materials contained
in each spill kit.
Spill Kit Supplies
Spill Kit Container
Spill kit containers come in a variety of shapes and sizes, from
a 5-gallon bucket, bag, cart, to 50-95 gallon overpacks depending
on your needs. It is a good idea to have an extra container or bag
on hand during a spill cleanup to hold any used absorbents. Make
sure the container has a sealable lid so it can be shipped out and
disposed of according to your local, state and federal disposal regulations.
Minumum PPE Supplies
To Be Included In A Spill Kit
- two pairs chemical splash goggles.
- two pairs chemical-resistant gloves. Thick
nitrile or neoprene gloves are recommended.
- two pairs plastic, vinyl or rubber shoe
covers.
- two disposable lab coats, aprons, or coveralls.
Spill Kit Absorbent Materials
A Spill kit should include a variety of universal absorbents that
can be used on almost any type of spill, such as absorbent pads,
pillows, spill socks, oil socks, absorbent boom for waterways and
loose absorbents.
Other Tools and Materials To Have in a Spill Kit During A
Spill Cleanup
- Polyethylene scoop, dust pan, or plastic shovel. You can use plastic when non sparking tools are required.
- Polyethylene broom or brush for solids.
- 3-5 mil thickness, waste bags. Do not use
a bio-hazardous bag
- Sealing tape.
- HPO hazardous waste labels.
- Forceps for picking up broken glass or other
sharp objects.
- General cleaner or detergent for
finishing cleanup of the spill.
NOTE: Contaminated cleaup materials can be considered
hazardous waste so it is recommended that disposable spill
kit supplies suchs as absorbents be used whenever possible.
Depending on the size and type of spill the following
are additional spill kit cleanup supplies to consider in a spill kit:
Added personal protection equipment such as face shields, chemical-resistant
clothing or boots.
Neutralizing agents.
- General neutralizing agents for acids
and bases (Adsorbents
and Neutralizers ).
- Chemical-specific neutralizers such as those for formaldehyde
or solvents.
- Mercury spill response items (see mercury
spill kits).
- Specialized supplies for air or water-reactive chemicals and
hydrofluoric acid.
- Bleach, if biological agents are used.
- Specialized supplies if radioactive materials are used.
