Safety Glasses and Goggles: Protecting the Windows to the Soul

According to Prevent Blindness America Organization, there are about 2,000 work-related eye casualties reported each day. These happen because of the many hazards that are present within the workplace. Some workers go blind because of severe eye impact. Even if the workers recover from their injuries, it will become difficult for them to perform their daily tasks or look for a new job. The blinded workers would feel incapable of providing for their family, and the feeling of being a burden to their loved ones will also have an impact on their psychological state.

A case study in 2003 was conducted by the British Journal of Ophthalmology, which included 71 service men with failing eyesight. They concluded that "many patients were still unable to carry out their preferred everyday activities, and feelings of loneliness and isolation were unchanged." The impact of losing their eyesight made these men develop lowered self-esteem and self-pity.

These are some of the common causes of eye injuries in the workplace:

Looking directly at intense glares from welding equipment or grinding machine sparks

Dust particles

Chemical splashes

Sudden explosions or blasts

Flying glass shards

Getting punctured in the eye by sharp or blunt objects (e.g. nails, wood splinters, metal slivers)

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Eye Protection Standard indicates that: "The employer shall ensure that each affected employee uses appropriate eye or face protection when exposed to eye or face hazards from flying particles, molten metal, liquid chemicals, acids or caustic liquids, chemical gases or vapors, or potentially injurious light radiation."

Wearing Safety Glasses and Goggles gives the workers proper eye protection. These prevent hazardous materials from entering or directly causing injury to the eyes while working with heavy equipment and machinery. There are different styles and models of eye protectors that are suitable for different working environment. Safety glasses have polarized UV protection and shaded filter lenses for better eye protection against intense glares and anti-fog coating for better visibility. Safety goggles have adjustable straps for tighter security from small particles and chemical fumes.

Eyes are very important to the human body. People can do almost anything because they can see. These help individuals see the beauty of their surroundings, identify objects and recognize the people they love. Eyes were said to be the windows to the human soul. Not seeing is simply living in an endless darkness. That is why employers must provide their workers the proper eye protection they need.
