The Importance of Floor Safety: Anti-Fatigue Mats

Anti-Fatigue Mats are workplace equipment used in different applications to provide the most ergonomic and safest environment for workers, whose jobs require them to spend considerable time standing in a given space. These anti-fatigue flooring mats are designed to absorb shock due to walking and standing by reducing foot stress and related body fatigue while promoting blood circulation and overall safety.

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends the use of anti-fatigue mats in the workplace, especially in industrial or commercial settings, to increase the quality of work conditions and prevent injuries and sickness that may result from standing too long at work. These have been proven by the Wearwell Productivity Study in 1998, in which an oven manufacturer installed anti-fatigue mats in their facility. After a year, productivity increased by 2.2% while absenteeism dropped from 5.2% to 4%.

Anti-fatigue mats are made from different materials such as vinyl, PVC tubing, rubber, PVC closed cell foam, nitrile rubber and polypropylene, to name a few. There are many types of floor safety products and anti-fatigue mats available on the market that meet the required needs of different work environments. Many of these safety mats are resistant to grease, solvents and other caustic chemicals and offer good traction. There are types of anti-fatigue matting that are suitable for dry and wet work areas while others are for work areas exposed to grease, oil, acids, alkalis, alcohol or flammables.

Anti-fatigue mats can be split into two major categories: solid mats for dry areas and drainage mats for wet areas. Solid mats increase traction in high-traffic walk areas while providing comfort. One of these solid mats is the diamond plate mat. Drainage mats are designed with slightly angled holes and underside knobs that allow water and debris to flow through. Some drainage mats also have added grit on the top surface for extra protection against slips and falls. Both solid mats and drainage mats are available in interlocking mat designs that can be customized to fit around machinery in any workplace.

Another type of anti-fatigue mats are the entrance mats, for both indoor and outdoor entrances that assist in cleaning and drying shoes when entering or existing an area. Other specialized types of mats include electrically conductive mats that function as protection for sensitive equipment, Non-conductive mats that protect workers from high-voltage equipment shocks and Weldsafe mats for welders.

Floor Safety Anti-Fatigue mats do not entirely eliminate all the hazards at a workplace. However, it does greatly improve working conditions and safety in the workplace plus provide comfort for workers. By using these anti-fatigue mats as floor covering for your work areas, your workers will effectively experience less pain and stress on their feet, and less body fatigue. It is the employer's duty to ensure a safe working environment for their workers and one way of doing this is by providing durable and effective floor safety anti-fatigue mats for the workplace.
